TalkMily is a site for practicing spoken English, in a trial version. This page says, simply, what is saved about you, where it goes, and how to delete it.
In short
- Your voice is not recorded, and the full transcript of a conversation is not saved. What is saved are the points to practice and a short summary.
- The coach runs on OpenAI, so what is said in a conversation goes there.
- No ads, no tracking, and your information is never sold.
- On the site you can delete any point, any conversation and any detail the coach remembers. Your whole account can be deleted by email.
What is saved
- From your Google account: your name and email address.
- Your settings: language, English level, the coach’s voice and the time limit.
- Points to practice: a sentence you said, how to say it better, an explanation, and how your practice is going.
- Conversations: when you talked, for how long, and a one- or two-sentence summary of what you talked about, so the coach remembers next time.
- Minutes of use: how long conversations and practice rounds lasted, to know how much the site is used.
- Read-alouds: an audio file of each corrected sentence, so it doesn’t have to be made again. The file is not tied to your name, so it stays after a deletion.
- What the coach knows about you: short details you shared yourself in a conversation, like your work, your hobbies, or why English matters to you. A plan coming up, like a presentation on Thursday, is forgotten by itself after a few weeks. You can turn this off in the settings; then the coach saves and uses no details at all.
What is not saved
- Your voice. It is not recorded. During a conversation it goes straight from your browser to OpenAI, so the coach can hear you and answer.
- The full transcript. At the end of a conversation it is sent to be checked, and only the points and the summary are kept.
- Sensitive details. The coach is told not to save anything about health, money, religion, politics or sexual orientation, identifying details (like an address, an ID number or a password), other people’s names, quarrels, or secrets from work, even if you mentioned them. If such a detail is saved anyway, you can delete it.
- Your time and day. The coach gets them when a conversation starts, so it won’t ask how your morning is going in the middle of the night, and they are not saved. Your location is never sent.
Where it goes, and why
A few services help the site work:
- OpenAI · the coach itself. Your voice goes there during a conversation, the transcript at its end, and the background the coach gets for a conversation: summaries of your latest conversations, what it knows about you, your points to practice, and your time and day. The read-alouds and longer explanations are made there too.
- Google · signing in with your Google account. Your name, email and profile picture come from there (the site doesn’t use the picture).
- The services the site runs on · its server, the database (where the information is kept, with the sign-in system) and the email service. The information passes through them or is kept there, only so the site works.
- Fonts and icons · loaded from public services, which get nothing of what you said or wrote.
Who sees it
- Your information shows only in your own account. Other testers see none of it.
- The site’s developer sees your name and email, when you joined, your points and conversations, and your minutes of use on the admin screen, to improve the site during the trial.
- What the coach knows about you is not shown on the admin screen, and the site’s developer doesn’t look at it.
Deleting
- A point or a conversation: with the trash button next to it.
- What the coach knows about you: each detail, or all of it, on the “What the coach knows about me” screen in the settings.
- Your whole account: write to hello@talkmily.com from the address you sign in with, and we delete the account and everything saved in it. A button for this in the settings is coming soon.
Emails
- When you sign up, the site’s developer gets an email with your name and email address, to approve the account.
- You get one email, when your account is approved. No newsletter, no ads.
In your browser
Your browser keeps your sign-in and what you picked on the site (like the language), so the site opens the way you left it. The site uses no tracking cookies.
